Life
Prashastapada was a major Vaisheshika author, conventionally placed around the fifth or sixth century CE. His personal history is poorly documented. His intellectual identity is much clearer: his exposition became a decisive point of reference for understanding the school after the foundational sūtras.
Contribution
He organised and elaborated the properties of the categories, giving substance, quality and relation a more systematic presentation. He also discusses cognition and inference, showing that the description of reality and the explanation of how it is known cannot be completely separated. His work helped make later cooperation between Vaisheshika and Nyaya possible.
Key works
- Padārthadharmasaṃgraha
- Often called the Praśastapādabhāṣya, this is a systematic exposition rather than a simple line-by-line explanation of Kanada’s text.
Legacy
Later authors such as Shridhara and Udayana wrote substantial commentaries on this work. Prashastapada is therefore an example of a system-builder whose contribution changes how the founder is read. The philosophical achievement lies in an organised account that can be taught, criticised and developed by others.
What must a classification explain if it is to describe reality rather than merely tidy up a list of words?
