Categories, particulars and the structure of the world

Traditional founder; exact dates unknown

01

Life

Kanada is the traditional author of the Vaiśeṣikasūtra. Precise dates and a continuous personal biography are not securely recoverable; even the chronology of the surviving text is contested. Stories explaining his name or describing his way of life belong to the tradition’s memory and should not be mistaken for independently confirmed events.

02

Contribution

The system associated with him distinguishes substances, qualities, motion, universals, particulars and inherence. Its atomism asks how composites arise from constituents while remaining intelligible as structured objects. This is a metaphysical account, not a claim that an ancient author anticipated the experimental findings of modern particle physics.

Key works

Vaiśeṣikasūtra
The foundational aphorisms. Their interpretation and the eventual standard account of the categories were developed extensively by later authors.
04

Legacy

Kanada’s legacy is an enduring question about classification: which differences belong to reality, and which belong only to the way we speak? Later Vaisheshika and Nyaya thinkers use categories to analyse causation, knowledge and liberation. The founder’s uncertain biography need not diminish the precision of those questions.

A question to carry

When an object changes, what remains the same thing and what becomes different?
