Siddhasena Divakara

A disciplined account of partial perspectives

c. 5th century CE; debated

01

Life

Siddhasena Divakara was an important Jain philosopher, often placed around the fifth century CE, though his chronology and biographical narratives are uncertain. He should not be casually identified with every later Jain scholar called Siddhasena. The evidence of works and their reception is more dependable than a harmonised story assembled from different traditions.

02

Contribution

He is associated with the development of naya, the analysis of standpoints. A statement can disclose an aspect of a complex reality while becoming misleading when treated as exhaustive. This is not the claim that every opinion is equally correct. The standpoint and limits of an assertion have to be specified.

03

Key works

Sanmatitarka / Saṃmatitarka
A central work associated with the analysis of standpoints and knowledge.
Nyāyāvatāra attribution
Traditionally connected with Siddhasena; questions concerning authorial identification should be kept in view when consulting editions.
04

Legacy

His contribution helped give Jain pluralism an argumentative form. The point is disciplined qualification, not refusal to judge. For comparative philosophy, this offers a useful challenge: before declaring two views incompatible, identify what each claims to describe and whether either is illegitimately universalising a partial account.
